2015
Stratford Circus Arts Centre
A variety of different classes at the Ivy Street Family centre and various other venues. Ranging from one-on-one SEN classes, nursery SEN classes, and community classes for early years.
The Event
Classes within the nursery focussed on movement to address the needs of children, such as communication, coordination and posture. The intergenerational classes of old and young allowed two parts of the community to integrate through dance. These classes were a mixture of seated and standing dance to accommodate for the varying movement abilities, allowing the younger children to move around the space and interact with the seated dancers.
My Role
My role in the project has been to assist the leading of the classes and to independently lead sections of creative play and movement. Some classes encourage parents to get involved, however, my responsibility was to monitor and direct the attention of the children whose parents were already preoccupied by another younger child of theirs.
Feedback
In July 2015, a celebratory workshop was held at Stratford Circus Theatre with all the staff, children, parents and care-workers involved in the project, where guest speakers discussed and emphasised the importance of dance in the community. The demonstrated success of the project secured funding for a further year.
